Class of 87: El Camino/Caballero?
Did we miss one? Our last article covered the new class of classic cars. There is one that according to Hemmings motor news should be considered even though it clearly lacked a powerplant that would appeal to any classic car purist. Hemmings states “Engine choices in 1987 for Chevrolet and GMC were a 145hp V-6 or a 150hp V-8″. Personally I can see why the El Camino/Caballero would be a big hit in Southern California. It represents the perfect surf mobile. However, til this day I’m still not really sure if it’s a car, truck or both! Enjoy this GM commercial that takes us back in time 25 years. RV as Moving Art
One would think that an RV is an artists dream. First, look at all that canvas. RV’s take up a large space and best of all – they are constantly on the move. Like an imaginatively designed bill board or a traveling museum the artists artworks world be seen far and wide. Also, artists are creative forces – constantly breaking out of routines and discovering new ideas. What better resource for creativity then adventure. This reminds me of Ken Kesey’s famous traveling bus Further.
Check out some of these fun RV artworks and if you see any photo worthy RV’s while you are out on the road, make sure to send us a picture and we will post it up.

Dutch Oven Meatloaf recipe-no need to plug your nose
In life there are often multiple meanings associated with words and this is a prime example of one. Today’s recipe will cover how to cook a meatloaf dish with a Dutch oven. For the longest time I have had my own definition of a Dutch oven and trust me it had nothing to do with cooking so let’s start with the freedictionary.com definition:
Dutch oven
1. A large, heavy pot or kettle, usually of cast iron and with a tight lid, used for slow cooking.
2. A metal utensil open on one side and equipped with shelves, placed before an open fire for baking or roasting food.
3. A wall oven in which food is baked by means of preheated brick walls.
My definition has to do with sheets and the unlawful act of trapping some not so pleasant fumes that is also a definition supported by urban dictionary.com. Now that we have that part covered check out this great Meatloaf recipe utilizing a Dutch Oven:
Meatloaf:
1 1/2 lb Ground beef
3/4 cup Quick oats
1 Egg
1/4 tsp Dry mustard
1/4 cup Bell pepper
1 pkt Onion soup mix
3/4 tsp Salt
1/8 tsp Marjoram
Mix all ingredients and put in casserole pan. Place in dutch oven. Bake 1 hour, covered

RV Books: The Milepost guide to Alaska
Recommended by the RV Book Store as an essential guidebook for RV or auto travelers who are headed to Alaska, the Yukon Territory, British Columbia, Alberta and the Northwest Territories. They state that the first edition printed in 1949 was only 72 pages long. At that point there was only 1,000 miles of connected road throughout Alaska. Today, The Milepost has grown into a fully-colored book with 800 pages and 300 color photos, including lots of attractions, activities and services stretching throughout the 88 highway and twisty Alaskan roads, Yukon Territory and parts of Western Canada. A popular feature of the book is its fold-out Plan-A-Trip Map.

Iconic Route 66 Roadside Attraction
Shea’s old filling station is located at 2075 Peoria Rd on Route 66 and has the feel of an American museum. As your RV tour rolls through Springfield Illinois you’ll come across his Marathon Station. It is filled with all the historical signs, oil artifacts, and classic pumps. Despite having a floor to sealing room full of gas pumps, there is no gas sold at this highway museum – so don’t pull in on empty – but it is quite the site and well worth the stop. Despite not selling any of these wonderful iconic artifacts – it is a great opportunity to get out your camera and take home some pictures that will bring you back in time.

Airstream Sterling Concept Trailer with Christopher Deam
Get ready for this stunning Airstream concept trailer that has both a futuristic while classically retro look. The Airstream Sterling Concept Trailer was built with a partnership with architect Christopher Deam that features a retro-yellow woven vinyl flooring, slick white leather upholstery, and Marimekko fabric. The countertops are lined with pure aluminum extrusions, that balance the aluminum look of the outside skin of the Airstream to line the interior fixtures.
I am ready to move in to the Airstream Sterling Concept ASAP! Hopefully this goes into production in 2012.

The Smithsonian Celebrates 100 Years of RVing
When starting a magazine influenced by all things Smithsonian, Edward Thompson recalled that his philosophy behind the magazine was that it “would stir curiosity in already receptive minds. It would deal with history as it is relevant to the present. It would present art, since true art is never dated, in the richest possible reproduction. It would peer into the future via coverage of social progress and of science and technology. Technical matters would be digested and made intelligible by skilled writers who would stimulate readers to reach upward while not turning them off with jargon. We would find the best writers and the best photographers—not unlike the best of the old Life.” The magazine launched in 1970 with a circulation of 160,000 early readers.
Now more than forty years later the Smithsonian is looking back at over 100 years of RVing. We thought this was a proud piece of American History to be celebrating what has become woven into the fabric of American tradition, the RV culture. Here is the Smithsonian’s article: Commemorating 100 Years of the RV. Be sure to check out the wonderful RV photo slideshow that accompanies the article: found here separately.
One New Year resolution we will be surely making is more RVing trips. If you’d like to join us in this RV New Year resolution come visit MCMahon RV, you can reach us here. Happy RVing.
Beep, Beep, Beep, Backing Up…
The most feared trailer maneuver for novices is backing up. But it’s really not that difficult. Like anything in life, you just got to jump into it and as Nike said so eloquently “Just Do It”. Here are four pointers to get you through the procedure.
- Before backing up, look at the steering wheel in front of you. Grab the wheel with one hand at 6 o’clock. Whichever way your hand moves is the direction the trailer will move.
- Once the trailer starts to jackknife, turn the steering wheel the opposite way as you look behind you to guide your car behind the path of the trailer.
- It’s easier to back to the left, where you have greater vision, than to back to the right. When backing right, try to station someone behind you to shout directions. If necessary, get out and look before you back.
- Pull ahead of the parking spot and point the car on a right angle when backing left, and on a left angle when backing right.
Trailer driving does not take exceptional driving skills. Its takes practice. Like every new driver, start out by practicing in a vacant parking lot and you will get the hang of it faster then you would believe. Plus, whenever you challenge yourself to something new like this – it is a giant confidence builder. We know you can do it.
